Global transport 128 billion tonnes; growth of sustainable transport in BRIC-countries

Panteia has provided insight into the transport over land modalities for 64 countries. These countries collectively represent roughly 90% of the world economy. [INVALID]d on the growth rates of the past, combined with forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the global economic development in individual countries, Panteia also made transport development predictions for 2016 and 2017.

Interestingly, the greatest growth in the BRIC-countries in the last 10 years is accounted for by inland waterway (+160%) and especially Chinese inland navigation (+175%). In order to achieve more sustainable transportation, transport solutions are being realised by use of inland waterways and rail, given that the country modalities are in competition with each other and are influenced by active modal split policy. This shows that the BRIC-countries are paying close attention to sustainable growth via inland navigation. In the future, it is expected that the sustainable growth trend will continue in these countries.
